“Our mission is to treat patients who require the most sophisticated and complex care and to advance our knowledge of basic and clinical science. We fulfill that objective through the recruitment and development of world-class physicians, faculty, and staff, and by investing in a state-of-the-art medical infrastructure. This allows Mount Sinai to continue to be the provider of choice for patients across the nation.”

Wayne E. Keathley
President and Chief Operating Officer of The Mount Sinai Hospital

For over 150 years, The Mount Sinai Hospital has been a leader in patient care. Staffed by world-class physicians and award-winning nurses, our institution is a destination for complex tertiary and quaternary care.

Since the Hospital’s founding, our doctors have turned to science to better understand the conditions they encountered in their patients. As a result of this tradition, more diseases have been named for Mount Sinai physicians — Crohn’s disease, Tay-Sachs disease, and Churg-Strauss disease among them — than for physicians at any other medical center in the world.

Our physicians have also been leaders in developing surgical procedures and technologies. Among many landmark accomplishments, Mount Sinai doctors performed the first successful liver transplant in New York State, and in 2009 the institution became the first hospital in the country to successfully perform left atrial appendage occlusion — an innovative procedure that can help obviate the need for lifelong anticoagulant treatment.

To further this trajectory of scientific and medical excellence, academic medical centers must grow and continue to treat patients who require the most sophisticated and complex care. Today, we do this in one of our nation’s most challenging economic eras — one that requires everyone at Mount Sinai to respond with creativity, passion, and commitment.

Well-planned growth continues to be the fundamental principle of our strategy, even during such challenging times. The recent groundbreaking for the Center for Science and Medicine demonstrates this approach. This world-class research center will boost our investigative capacity by one-third, allowing us to continue to recruit talent from around the globe.

Over the past several years, the high caliber of our staff has helped The Mount Sinai Hospital achieve a remarkable record of growth in patient discharges, transfers from other institutions, surgical procedures, ambulatory care visits, physician recruitments, and improved financial standing. Our commitment to excellence in all aspects of patient care will further establish Mount Sinai as a national leader in health care.
