The Center for Science and Medicine will conduct significant cancer research and treatment programs, which will benefit the surrounding community, where the cancer death rate is 30 percent higher than the average in New York City. As a result of the expanded research space, Mount Sinai will be able to enhance research on heart and brain diseases, children’s health, asthma, diabetes and hypertension.
Construction and operation of the Center for Science and Medicine will provide concrete economic and health benefits to the local community. Mount Sinai is already the leading employer in East Harlem, and nearly one-half of the visits to its outpatient clinics are from Harlem residents. Mount Sinai is committed to facilitating participation in this project by local business, minority business, and the local workforce.
Economic and health benefits of the Center include:
- An average of 1,260 full-time new construction jobs for each of the three years of construction.
- More than 650 permanent new employment opportunities with an annual payroll of nearly $40 million. These new jobs will include 100 new faculty members, 100 graduate students, 125 postdoctoral fellows, 200 technicians, 25 secretaries, 10 administrators, 21 engineering jobs and at least 50 building operations jobs.
- 400 new patient visits per day.
- Expanded research in cancer, brain, heart disease, asthma, diabetes, hypertension, obesity and other areas of research and clinical care.
- More than 200 physicians, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, medical assistants, registration and financial personnel, and other administrative staff to support operations of the CSM outpatient facilities.
- In collaboration with the East Harlem community, implementation of a community construction employment program.
- More than $350 million in additional National Institutes of Health funding during the first five years.
- Fifty additional patent applications and 15 patent licenses.
- Formation of four new start-up companies generating 50 new jobs.
Construction began in the summer of 2009 and the building should be complete in late 2012. We will continue to provide updates on the CSM building and appreciate your patience as construction continues.
