Medical geneticists and genetic counselors in the Human Genetics faculty practice specialize in the screening, diagnosis, treatment, and counseling of patients with, or suspected of having, genetic diseases, birth defects, reproductive problems, or cancer risks. Expert care is provided to adults with genetic disorders, children with congenital birth defects or metabolic disorders, pregnant women with genetic concerns (such as exposure to agents that may cause birth defects or previous pregnancy losses due to genetic factors), and families with a history of certain cancers. Mount Sinai is home to several programs specializing in genetic diseases, and state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratory services are also available. Every medical geneticist in the Human Genetics faculty practice is a member of the staff of The Mount Sinai Hospital and of the faculty of Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Mount Sinai’s Department of Human Genetics is one of the largest in the country dedicated to the understanding, prevention, treatment, and cure of genetic diseases, birth defects, and genetic pregnancy loss.
